What is a malachite stone?

Malachite is a fine stone (formerly called"stone semi-precious"), a green gem characterized by the light and dark green zonations that have made it famous. It is usually cut in cabochon to highlight these shades of green. It has been widely used in ornamental objects such as Fabergé eggs, the best-known deposits being in the Urals. Today, most malachite comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Namibia. It has a hardness of 3.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale.
