What is a Turquoise stone ?

Turquoise is a fine stone (formerly called "stone half-precious") of blue color, often covered with black veins called "matrix". This stone was originally brought from Persia by the Turks, who then sold it to Europeans. The most beautiful turquoise is currently mined in Iran, in the Nishapur region, where it is free of impurities. Turquoise with matrix comes mainly from the United States, but it is also found in Afghanistan, Nepal (green), and Latin America. Turquoise has a hardness ranging from 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
