What is a Jasper stone ?

A jasper is a fine stone (formerly called half-precious stone) which is part of the Chalcedony family, like the Agate. Jasper is opaque and comes in a variety of colors but remains in dark red, brown and dark green hues. It is often cut in cabochon or engraved, used in jewelry as well as for ornamentation. Red jasper is highly valued for its non-aggressive color. It is said to release stress and external tensions. It has a hardness of 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale.
