Hypersthene is a fine stone (formerly known as a semi-precious stone), belonging to the pyroxene family which also includes aegirine, jadeite, spodumene, and diopside. It is composed of iron and magnesium. It falls between enstatite and ferrosilite in the orthopyroxene family. It has a hardness of 3.4 to 3.9 on the Mohs scale.
