Sugilite stone has a recent history, as it was only discovered in the 20th century. The sugilite stone owes its name to Sugi Kenichi (1901-1948) who first described it in 1944. This Japanese geologist and petrologist identified it in an ægyrine and syenite intrusion located on the islet of Iwagi, near Kyoto, Japan.
