History of Obsidian

Obsidian stone has been used to make tools and weapons since the Paleolithic era. This natural rock is still mined today by some Indian tribes. In an ancient region of Iraq called Mesopotamia, popularly known as the "land between two rivers," 5,000-year-old obsidian knives have been discovered in archaeological excavations in recent years. Although found all over the world, obsidian stone is considered unique to Mexico, as it has been quarried there for millennia throughout history.

In some cultures, Obsidian point was considered as a symbol of death. It was often used in ceremonies and rituals to accompany the deceased into the afterlife - more broadly, to honor them in this world. For the ancient Egyptians, obsidian blades were made from these rocks and were sharper than glass blades - not only making it easier but also quicker to cut into bodies during the mummification processes that took place during funerals. At that time (around the 2nd millennium BC), these small black stones could be sold at a high price because they represented wealth.

Origin and composition

The name "Obsidian" would be derived from the Latin word "obsidio" which means "to concern", in reference to the cracks and crevices on the rocks which one finds naturally. Obsidian is a black, red, gray or dark green stone of volcanic origin. The siliceous mineral constitutes the essential of its composition (silicomagnesium chloride). Its color can vary according to the quantity of hematite and magnetite which it contains: if it contains much of it, it is brownish red, if not it can have a blue tint because of the content of oxide of manganese.
Obsidian has special characteristics: sharp, curved edges, a smooth but fractured surface texture, and conchoidal fractures that run through the rock. These characteristics make obsidian very easy to break into small pieces using hand tools such as picks or hammers.

Virtues

The stone Obsidian is a very protective stone. It can act very quickly to offer protection against negative energies or to protect a vulnerable person as the one who wears an obsidian bracelet. Therapists buy it, position it between their hands and at the root chakra, then mentally protect themselves from any disturbances with its help.
It is also known to combat negative energies in the surrounding area while bringing much comfort as well as the desire to move forward and change things for good! To do this, it removes bad thoughts from your mind so that you are less stressed.

How to purify stones?

There are three methods to purify stones when they arrive in your hands and their energies are exhausted:

-purification with distilled or demineralized water;

-sea salt;

-by burying in the ground
