Introduction to Pearls

Whether natural pearls or modern cultured pearls, pearls are precious gemstones that have likely always been appreciated, coming in a wide range of colors. The colors we are most familiar with are white and cream (light fawn). Black, gray, and silver pearls are also common, but pearls exist in almost every color. The primary color (body color) of a pearl is often altered by additional colors (overtones), which are often pink (sometimes called rosé), green, violet, or blue. Some pearls exhibit iridescence, a phenomenon known as pearlescence.

Cultured pearls are often used in pearl necklaces and bracelets, or set in single stone rings, pairs or clusters of earrings, rings, or pendants.
