What is a citrine stone?

Citrine is a fine stone (formerly called semi-precious ), a variety of quartz, whose yellow color is due to the presence of minute quantities of iron oxides in the mineral. The term comes from the Latin "citrus", meaning lemon, in reference to its color. Citrine can be pale yellow, lemon, but also orange and bright "Madeira" orange. The first deposits are found in Brazil and Madagascar. Its shades of yellow and orange easily brighten up any piece of jewelry. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.
