What is a Sodalite stone?

Sodalite is a fine stone (formerly called "stone half-precious"). It is an intense purplish blue gemstone, often with fine white veins of calcite. It can be used in the composition of lapis lazuli but has a much more violet hue than the latter. The main deposits are in Brazil, Canada and the United States where it is widely used in jewelry for its intense color. It has a hardness of 5.5 and 6 on the Mohs scale.
