What is a lapis lazuli stone?

Lapis lazuli is a fine stone (formerly called"stone half-precious"), it is a rock composed of different minerals that give it its overseas blue color, its fine white veins (calcite) and its small golden dots (pyrite). The Persians considered lapis to be the most precious stone because they saw it as a starry sky. The Persians had the finest deposits of lapis, and Iran continues to produce high quality stones. The mines in the Sar-e-Sang region of Afghanistan produce the finest lapis, which was praised by Marco Polo. The most productive deposits today are found around the city of Ovalle, Chile, which has chosen lapis lazuli as its national stone. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.
