What is a Lapis Lazuli Stone?

Lapis Lazuli is a gemstone (formerly known as a "semi-precious stone"), it is a rock composed of different minerals that give it its ultramarine blue color, fine white veins (calcite), and small golden flecks (pyrite). The Persians considered lapis to be the most precious stone, as they saw it as a starry sky. The Persians had the most beautiful lapis deposits, and Iran continues to produce high-quality stones. The mines in the Sar-e-Sang region of Afghanistan produce the finest lapis, which Marco Polo already praised. The most productive deposits currently are found around the city of Ovalle, in Chile, which has chosen lapis lazuli as its national stone. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.
