What is a Turquoise Stone?

Turquoise is a fine stone (formerly known as a "semi-precious stone") with a blue color, often streaked with black veins called "matrix." This stone was originally brought from Persia by the Turks, who then sold it to Europeans. The finest turquoises are currently extracted in Iran, in the Nishapur region, where they are free of impurities. Turquoises with matrix mainly come from the United States, but can also be found in Afghanistan, Nepal (green), and Latin America. Turquoise has a hardness ranging from 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
