The nazar boncuk, from the Arabic nazar "evil eye" and boncuk "amulet" in Arabic, is a talisman in the shape of a blue and round eye, which would have the power to keep away the evil eye, the malicious people, and to protect its carrier. The nazar boncuk is widespread in the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea such as Turkey (where it is most common), Greece, Armenia, Iran, and Azerbaijan. It is sometimes called "blue eye" or "Fatima eye". As mother-of-pearl is an organic material, each one is unique and may show some differences with the picture. The nacre covers the interior of the shellfish which also produces it to defend itself when a foreign element penetrates its shell, thus giving a pearl.
