What is an Opal Stone?

Opal is a fascinating gemstone (formerly known as "semi-precious stone") with a wide variety and a broad color palette. Some varieties of opal have a very interesting play of colors, and their iridescence is only visible when exposed to light. That's why it is often cut into cabochons to protect it from impacts. Australia produces over 95% of the most beautiful opals. Latin America, especially Mexico, is known for its fire opals with a bright orange color that can be faceted. It has a hardness between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale. If you want to learn more about its history and virtues, check out our article on Opal stone.
