What is a Tiger Eye Stone?

Tiger eye is a semiprecious stone, a variety of chatoyant quartz whose fascinating golden color, playing with light, is due to oxidized crocidolite fibers. This gem is cut into cabochon and sometimes very lightly faceted to enhance its golden reflections. The largest deposits are found in South Africa, but it can also be found in India, Myanmar, western Australia, and in small quantities in the United States. Its uniqueness makes it a stone appreciated in jewelry at a reasonable cost. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.
