What is a Moonstone?

Moonstone is a gemstone (formerly known as a "semi-precious stone"), also called Adularia. It is generally white with a subtle play of colors in shades of blue and pink called "adularescence". It evokes the innocence of the Moon and is associated with fertility and femininity. Its main deposits are found in India, Sri Lanka, and Australia. In India, it is called "chandrakant", which means "loved by the Moon" in Hindi (from "chandra": moon and "kanta": loved). A symbol of purity, Moonstone pairs well with a variety of alloys and softens any outfit. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
