Lepidolite is a stone from the Micas family that has no defined gender and can be used in masculine and/or feminine forms. The stone offers tender color blends ranging from violet to pink, through gray and even white, creating unique color blends. Lepidolite is often used in lithotherapy for its soothing, anti-stress properties.

History of Lepidolite

The word "Lepidolite" comes from the ancient Greek "lepis" meaning "scale" and "lithos" meaning "stone", which literally means "scaly stone". Unfortunately, little is known about Lepidolite stone.

A German geologist by the name of Nicolaus Poda von Neuhaus is said to have proposed several names for Lepidolite. He proposed calling the stone "lilanthite" or "lilalite" in reference to its lilac color. It was the German mineralogist Carl Friedrich August Rammelsberg who proposed the name "Lepidolite" in 1861, which was recognized and accepted. Note that this stone has no defined gender, and can be described as feminine or masculine.

Origin and composition of Lepidolite

Lepidolite stone belongs to the Silicate family, more specifically to the Micas category. It is mainly composed of potassium, lithium and aluminum, with the chemical formula K(Li,Al)3(Si,Al)4O10(F,OH)2. Inclusions of iron, magnesium, fluorine and hydroxyl are also present. Stone density varies between 2.8 and 3.2.

The stone forms mainly in lithium-rich metamorphic rocks and pegmatites. The colors of Lepidolite vary according to the conditions of formation, such as pressure, temperature and the chemical composition of the hydrothermal fluid, and their chemical composition, such as lithium, manganese, cesium or chromium. Occasionally, mineral inclusions are incorporated into Lepidolite, as in the case of tourmaline Lepidolite.

Lepidolite can be found all over the world, but its main deposits are in Brazil, the USA, Canada, Zimbabwe, Russia and Australia.

Lepidolite's hardness ranges from 2.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale.
